From Library Journal Bon was the Venetian representative to the Ottoman court from 1604 to 1607. His firsthand account of life in the Ottoman Empire encompasses a wide variety of topics, from the physical layout of the sultan's palace to questions of religious observance and the education of the cadets at the palace school. Bon was recording his impressions of an Islamic state that had represented a threat to Christian Europe for centuries and, by the time of his account, had conquered the greater part of the Balkans and Hungary. Bon's contemporaries were interested in acquiring factual intelligence on the Ottomans, much as their descendants needed an understanding of the workings of the Kremlin. This facsimile of a 17th-century English translation has been annotated by British historian Godfrey Goodwin and includes a glossary of Turkish words. The writing is stilted and not for the lay reader. Recommended for academic libraries with extensive holdings in Middle Eastern studies.?Robert J. Andrews, Duluth P.L., Minn.
