The bishops' statement condemning the use of Reiki by nuns comes at an opportune time (NCR, April 17). The daily readings from Acts in the Easter season recount the Sanhedrin's condemnation of Peter and John for healing a cripple. The main reason in both cases is that the religious men in power want to be in control of God's ministry of healing. Interestingly enough, the bishops at the same time have initiated an investigation of women religious, many of whom practice Reiki as a healing ministry, concerned about their "decline in numbers." These women, baptized into the risen Christ, the healer, have taken the time and energy to offer the faithful a holistic way of healing. Surely their...
