From Library Journal F Fialka, an adventurous, sexually liberated Czech woman and nature lover, fights the stifling uniformity and grayness of life in Communist Czechoslovakia by escaping Prague on hitchhiking trips to photograph wild flowers and to engage in passionate one-night stands with Czech truck drivers. When her friend Patrick gets multiple sclerosis, she starts to pick up Western truckers, asking for hard currency for her love in order to buy Patrick a scarce, expensive wheelchair. Selling herself takes the joy out of her adventures, but luckily she falls in love with a Swedish trucker, who gets Patrick the chair. Fialka herself forgoes a chance to follow her love to the West, preferring her adventures with the Czech truckers. While the ending does not ring true, this engaging first novel, full of graphic yet lyrical descriptions of female sexual experience, is written with verve and wit. Recommended.
