Kindergarten-Grade 2 Having tricked Doctor Change into believing that he is illiterate (a precondition for employment), the story's young hero, Tom, is hired, then held captive, by the mysterious doctor. True to his name, Doctor Change is an unusual man who never seems to stay in the same shape for long. Frightened by the strange things he observes, Tom decides to leave his employer, but finds that he can't escape. When the doctor is away, Tom gains access to his forbidden book of spells. He learns quickly and soon outwits the doctor with some changes of his own, winning his freedom, a beautiful young girls' heart, and a small fortune as well. Sound familiar? Several traditional fairy tale themes are woven into this new story, but it never quite succeeds in grabbing readers by involving them in the characters or the fantasy. The writing is adequate but unexciting. Despite Carrick's lovely pen-and-ink and watercolor period paintings that reflect the 19th-Century setting, this is not a first-choice selection.
