In The Forever Dad, Ken Brown shares his story about raising a challenging teenager. He offers hope and lessons learned to parents with an oppositional child.

Adopted as a newborn, Sam’s parents, Ken and Janie Brown have a vision of the life they want to create for him. When Sam turns 13, he rebels. He no longer wants to be a part of the family. Like getting hit by a tornado, the Brown’s are blindsided when Sam drops everything that used to be important to him – friends, family, and hobbies.

Feeling hopeless and frustrated, Ken remembers the promise he made to Sam’s birth mother, to raise him “right.” But as Sam’s unpredictable behavior escalates, it gets harder for Ken to keep his promise. Sam gets mad, runs away, gets in trouble, and has to face consequences that include getting expelled from school, going to treatment, being sent to a county home school, and landing in jail.

In the beginning of the story Ken behaves co-dependently. By working the 12 steps of AA, Ken learns to press the pause button when his life becomes unmanageable. He takes long rides on his motorcycle to temporarily escape the pain in his heart. Unexplainably, the wind on his face, talking to strangers, and connecting with nature, all help him to cool-down and regroup. By the end of the story, Ken has acquired new tools that help change his behavior when Sam acts out. The tools include setting boundaries, conflict resolution, and letting go. Ken learns to let “life” teach Sam the lessons he needs to learn.

The Forever Dad is a true rite of passage story told straight from the heart. Read how Ken shares his experience, strength, and hope about the challenges he faces with Sam, and learns how to keep moving forward, one day at a time. pdf
