From Library Journal When her 17-year-old daughter Karen became pregnant, Stephenson helped her choose open adoption, a process in which birth records are not kept secret. Their decisions and feelings, and the legal, medical, and economic complexities of the proceedings are sincerely retold. But how Karen chose the adopting couple and kept in touch with her daughter after the birth is less the book's subject than an agonized mother-daughter relationship. A comfortable middle-class California setting, expected resolution of crisis after conflict, and novelistic treatment produce a made-for-TV-movie feel. More thorough and factual, yet still personal, is Lincoln Caplan's An Open Adoption ( LJ 5/15/90). Recommended for comprehensive collections serving social service professionals and involved parties.
